The Savannah River region of South Carolina covers a sizeable area of the western Lowcountry and has many of the same characteristics as the ACE Basin. Known as a very rural area, the Savannah River region stretches from Aiken County down through Barnwell, Bamberg, Allendale, and Hampton counties. Some of the small towns that make up this area include Estill, Yemassee, Varnville, Brunson, Fairfax, Ulmer, New Ellenton, Denmark, Williston, Ehrhardt, and Kline.
Sizable properties can be obtained along the Savannah River and inland, with parcels ranging from 50 to 3,000 acres. An outdoorsman's paradise, this area is filled with deer, ducks, quail, turkeys, and boar. Large vacant tracts offer the indigenous longleaf pine, loblolly pine, bottomland hardwood forests, savannas, and cypress tupelo swamps. Plantations unharmed by General Sherman are plentiful, providing live oaks, seasonal creeks, duck ponds, and more. Groton Plantation, protected with a conservation easement in 2002 donated by the Winthrop family, provides 24 miles of protected frontage along the Savannah River.
A unique area of South Carolina, the Savannah River region is very remote. While the cities of Aiken, Augusta, and Savannah are a reasonable drive away, this area has no immediate access to larger cities or towns, making this private, serene area an ideal place for the rural land buyer.
